KONDUGA, NIGERIA - According to reports coming in from Borno State in Nigeria, the Islamic group, Boko
Haram has allegedly claimed responsibility for the killing of at least 45 people
at a mosque in north-eastern Nigeria.
The killings took place during dawn prayers on Sunday in the town of Konduga, 35km (22 miles)
from the state capital, Maiduguri.
When the Boko Haram attacks started in 2009, they only attacked Christians and churches. The government stepped up its program against the Boko Haram and community members grouped up to start vigilante watches to defend their neighborhoods. Many of the vigilantes are Muslims.
There is speculation that the gunmen suspected that a group of vigilantes were worshiping in the mosque at the time of the attack. This has moved the Boko Haram activities to another level - they plan to eliminate anyone who does not support their views including Muslims.
