11 die during Nigerian Immigration Services recruitment exercise

NIGERIA - 11 people have been confirmed dead in Abuja and at a venue in Rivers State, Nigeria where recruitment exercises were held for unemployed people on Saturday an official said . The recruitment organised by the Immigration Services of Nigeria attracted over 70,000 unemployed
people nationwide for the 7,000 available vacancies. It was alleged that the main gate to the Abuja Stadium was kept locked during the exercise. Reports confirm that when the event ended, people piled in front of the gates and then forced it down. Many women closest to the gate were crushed and several were killed during the stampede.

Similar exercises were held simultaneously in Lagos and other parts of the country.

Nigeria has a high unemployment rate, (30% of Nigeria's youth are unemployed) and it appears the country may not be able to reach the employment target proposed for 2020.
