LAGOS, NIGERIA - The State government has warned residents living along the coast of the Atlantic ocean to live their home immediately, due to ripple effects from Hurricane Sandy which could reach West Africa within the next seven days.

Speaking to news agents in Lagos on Tuesday, the State commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Prince Segun Oniru, told newsmen that the likelihood of large waves hitting Nigeria's coasts was high.

"We want to let Lagosians know what is going on, and what to expect; it is not to create panic. They should be careful around the ocean and lagoon."

Also at the news conference were the commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba and special adviser to the governor on environment Taofeek Folami. The government urged residents in coastal areas to be alert.

Lagos lies on the coastal plains of south western Nigeria in the gulf of West Africa. Most of the land is at sea level and a large chunk of land has been reclaimed and this causes frequent floods in the city especially during the rainy season. Areas such as Lekki, Victoria Island and Eleko have a range of super top end homes with prices which start from £500,000.

Super storm Hurricane Sandy hit parts of the Caribbean and the north east coast of America causing monstrous tidal waves and killing over a hundred people . Over 8 million homes are without power nad many more have been rendered homeless. A huge clear up costing $22 billion is underway.
