Virgin losses rail franchise bid to FirstGroup

 
 
UNITED KINGDOM - The Virgin Rail, a joint venture between Virgin Group and Stagecoach has lost its bid to run the West Coast mainline rail franchise to Aberdeen based firm, FirstGroup.  The £5.5bn contract came as a blow to Sir Richard Branson head of the Virgin Group who had run the franchise since 1997.
The FirstGroup will now operate the franchise for the next 14 years starting from December 2012.
