Age 38, Armstrong was the first person to step onto the surface of the moon |
He was the commander of the Apollo 11 mission and as such, on July 20, 1969, Armstrong stepped onto the dusty surface of the moon as the first person ever to walk on the surface of the moon.
Aged 38, Armstrong stood on the moon saying one of the most famous quotes in history: 'That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.'
It was a personal achievement not only for Armstrong but also for America. The mission provided the USA with a sense of achievement in the space race with Cold War rival the Soviet Union especially at a time when Washington was at war with the communists in Vietnam.
A brief History: Mission to the Moon
On
July 16, 1969, three astronauts embarked on a historic mission to reach the
moon. Four days later, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin became the first humans
to set foot on an extraterrestrial body.

14-15, 1969: Three men were getting ready to go on a long adventurous and
eye-opening journey - the first of its
kind to explore the moon.

16, 1969: Apollo 11 mission took off on a journey that would change the human
view of the world forever.

17-19, 1969: It took the team one day to get to the moon and another
couple of days to explore it.
