South Africa: Calm returns to Marikana after 18 shot dead

MARIKANA, SA - After a three minute shooting spree between the South-African police force and miners, 18 lay dead and wounded.  The incident which took place at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana, South Africaon Thursday started when miners began a protest to increase their wages from £400 to £800.

According to reports, there was a brief stand off between a group of miners and the local police force during which tear gas was used. The miners fired what seemed like shots and the police fired back continuosly for about three muinutes. When the dust finally settled over the area, more than a dozen men lay dead.

 Local eye-witnesses report that an uneasy calm has returned to the troubled mine.
