How to apply for a Nigerian visa

Applying for a Nigerian visiting or tourist visa can be fun and adventurous or distressful and disturbing. You may be planning to travel to Nigeria and probably don’t know what to expect. Recently, I applied for a Nigerian visa and this is how I managed to succeed the unforgettable experience.

Follow these steps and it will save you time, money and peace of mind:

STEP ONE: Go to the Nigerian High Commission website.
Read security instructions – on pop up page. To summarize, it states the Commissions visiting hours which are from 11am-5pm and strictly by appointment. The strictly by appointment bit is not entirely true. Plus, the commission close at 4.30pm.

STEP ONE: You will be visiting the Commission for your visa at some point, when  you do, you must go to through the Immigration or Consular Service side entrance not the front entrance. Once you enter, there is no screening as such and you don’t have to wear any Identity cards or tags.
Everyone and everything except cars and trucks are allowed into the Commission. You may be told to switch of your mobile phone though. CCTV may be in operation so beware of your actions.

STEP THREE: Start your application online by clicking on the visa-requirements tab and briefly read through what you need before you apply.
  • Requirements for an adult visiting visa
  • There are different requirements for each type of visa, so check carefully, they take this seriously. For an adult’s visiting or tourist’s visa you will need the following documents:
  •
  • Valid National Passport (minimum period validity 6 months at the time of travel) or any other acceptable Travel Document – like an emergency travel certificate;
  • A printed copy of your completed Online Visa Application Form (with TWO passport size photographs attached), and a copy of Payment Confirmed page;
  • A signed letter of invitation from Nigeria, addressed to the Visa Section, Nigeria High Commission, London, accepting full immigration/evidence of sustaining self while in Nigeria. This can be scanned and emailed to the commission, a copy sent to you may save you time. Print them out.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds must be provided – in the form of a copy of your bank statements or statements from your friends or family in Nigeria. Print them out.
  • Photocopy of Invitee's Passport – this can be scanned and sent to you, then you print it out.
  • A receipt of the visa fee you paid and £20 or £50 processing fees (plus interest on the POs) in British Postal Order made payable to the Nigeria High Commission, London.
  • If you don’t have a British passport you will need to provide evidence of legal stay or residence permit in the UK.  If you do not have a legal right to stay in the UK, you will have to get your visa from your country of origin.
  • If you are traveling by land in your own vehicle you should attach copies of your vehicle particulars to your application.
  • If you are traveling through other countries before getting to Nigeria you should provide Evidence of Entry Visa/Entry Permit to the country you are passing through endorsed in the passport.
  • You may be interviewed before visa/entry permits are issued
