- South Africans was awash with excited crowds who filled the streets
celebrating Nelson Mandela's 94th birthday. The streets of Qunu, Mandela’s
childhood village came to a halt as people greeted and congratulated each other
reports say. The whole nation on Wednesday honoured the legacy of the famous
statesman by participating in good deeds nationwide.
Mandela was celebrated worldwide on
his birthday for his role in reconciling a country torn apart by apartheid. In South Africa,
citizens performed at least 67 minutes of public service, a reference to the
number of years he devoted to helping others.
In the village of Qunu,
relatives, including children and grandchildren, gathered to mark his birthday
and perform community service at the local health centres.
Later, Mandela’s family got together
for a meal that included a champagne toast and his favourite dish of tripe, a
meat delicacy.
As I as thought about the man Mandela, I began to remember why he is has
been so honoured and powerful words suchleader, courage, hero,
inspiration, legend, role model, freedom and hope come to mind. I looked
through Twitter and Facebook for some inspiration and well wishers from all
around the world poured out millions of heart-warming messages.
