Natwest and Royal Bank of Scotland back from brink of closure?

LONDON, UK - Natwest and the Royal Bank of Scotland customers across the UK and Europe were on Wednesday unable to move money, withdraw or pay bills as millions of accounts were frozen and wage payments failed to arrive.

There have been reports of holidaymakers stranded in the Eurozone. However, an updated statement on the site confirms that the services are now up and running. It states:

  • We can confirm that all account balance information has now been updated. The majority of customers will now be able to view an up to date balance, however some customers may still be impacted.
  • We recognise this has caused significant inconvenience for our customers, and we continue to work to resolve these issues and restore a full service.
  • Over 1,000 NatWest branches in all major towns and cities will remain open until 7pm tonight to assist customers who are unable to get to their branch during working hours, and will be open again at normal hours tomorrow morning.
  • Staff at our call centres are also ready to answer questions and help where they can."

Previously, a statement explaining that there were technical difficulties appeared overnight on the website.

Millions of business owners have been unable to py wages. NatWest, which carries the new ad slogan 'Helpful Banking', has not said whether it will cover penalties imposed on its customers by third parties for late payments on credit cards and bills.

Mobile Apps problems

Last Wednesday, NatWest heralded a leap forward for its mobile phone payment technology.
It launched a mobile banking app that lets people to withdraw money from cash machines using their smartphone. The system called - GetCash - would allow people to take cash from an ATM without using their cash card, by making a request on their handset.
They are sent a six digit pin number, after making the request, which can be entered at a cash machine.

The aim, the bank said, was to help people who may have lost or forgotten their card or those who want to leave their wallet at home.
It was made available to around two and-a-half million customers who already have the banking app on their phone - on iPhone, Android or BlackBerry Smartphones, and on the iPad.

But the rush to offer new technology may come at a price.
Experts warned that customers of UK banks would increasingly face such problems because of the rush to deliver new and evermore sophisticated services.
