Film Review: Nollywood's latest movie - Murderer-in-law produced by Tolu Yesufu

Tolu Yesufu is a talented actress, screen writer and producer. You can read more about her here. She is known for her production of Shattered hearts where she played Lola. You can watch it below. Her new movie, 'Murderer-in-law' premiered on Friday 26 June and here is the iShine Magazine exclusive review:

The film started about 10.30pm. There was the usual red carpet affair. To be honest, I did not know any of the actors or heard of them before apart from Tolu Yesufu who featured in Shattered Hearts a  couple of years ago. (I was thee).

The atmosphere was warm and the cool London summer breeze that blew was refreshing. I must say there were a lot of photographers and radio stations present. I have never heard of any of them before and I don't know where they air. But I guess they must be doing well. My guess is that the photographers must be freelance.

I watched from a distance to take the whole event it. Normally I would be on the red carpet taking pictures. I went to collect my wrist band and I must say I had a gold VIP one. I didn't know this because I didn't really look at the tickets when they arrived. So, that was nice to have. I had one and my 16-year-old son who was my escort for the night had one too.

The actors, I must say were very beautifully dressed - long evening gowns, fresh make-up and gorgeous shoes and jewellery to match. Nollywood Queen Theodora Ibekwe-Oyebade   who was responsible for the PR of the event had her elegant dress made by Cameroon born designer and Top Designer of the Year winner, Martine Boss Moussongo. The men also looked sharp. The crowd came ready for photo opportunities too.

When it was time to go into the screening hall, the gold wrist band holders were ushered in first. There were people with blue bands but I don't know whether they had to pay or something. We went upstairs and were ushered into a VIP area, I think there were about 40 of us. We were offered some snacks - a sausage roll, meat pie, a piece of succulent chicken and suya by a professional team of waiters and waitresses! That I must say was a pleasant surprise - so the night got better and better. Good hospitality points there.

About 15 minutes later, we entered the screening hall. I must say that there was huge turn out...about 300 or 400 people and two screens were used. I found a comfortable viewing point and then, the actors were introduced.

The whole viewing time was about 2 hours. The movie can be classified as a dark comedy. The film is about a young man TJ plated by Ade Bello who meets a young woman and they fall in love. His mother meets her son's new girlfriend and doesn't like her and she does all she can to get rid of her son's girlfriend. The girlfriend, Lola played by Tolu Yesufu is determined to hold on to her man and she plays her own little games to try to win her boyfriend's mother over but she fails. When she loses her job TJ invites her to move him with him and his mother and that's where the story gets interesting. Lola rents a mum, Gift Boyo who is actually her friend to come and live in the house to help fight the mother-in-law. Then, one day, the rented mum hears TJ mum confess on the phone that she killed TJ's dad.

The film is funny all the way to the end. The music used in film is light and invigorating from Wizkid's song tracks to Olamide's, ‘Eleda mi o’ and many more. There were points in the film when I wanted to stand up and dance. There was a sure feel good factor about the film despite it being about murder. An exceptional performance by Tolu Yesufu who played a smart Nigerian lady of the moment and of course TJ, the mother-in-law, the house girls - Ifeoma Okeke and Vanessa Adekola, the landlord, Ken Smart who was continuously duped by pretty young women. Overall, a magnificent film with many funny bits, nice music, brilliant video photography but could be better with a more defined story line.
