NIGERIA - 100 widows and divorcees in mass wedding

KANO - NIGERIA. The Kano State Hisbah Command on Tuesday married off the first set of 100 widows and divorcees out of the 1,000 it intends to give out before the end of the year, on behalf of the state government.

The solemnisation of the marriage took place at the Palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado
Bayero, in a colourful ceremony.
Director General of the Hisbah command, Malam Abba Sufi, told the News Agency of Nigeria shortly after the ceremony that there were over one million widows and divorcees in Kano.

He said the initiative was part of the efforts of Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso to transform the lives of women and the Kano society in general. The mass ceremony was sponsored by local government in northern Nigeria. The aim is to try to reduce a rising divorce rate in the state of Kano and provide the women with a stable home and financial and social security

“Many wealthy individuals supported the event and we are sure that the pilot marriage will pave way for more support from the public,” he said.
The Deputy Commander of the Sharia enforcement outfit, Dr. Yakubu Kachako, expressed optimism that the new couples would live peacefully and happily.
He urged the couples to use the lessons learnt from the training earlier given to them by the board to effectively perform their marital duties and responsibilities.

NAN reports that a businessman, Alhaji Isyaku Rabi’u paid the bride price of N10, 000 for each of the 100 brides on behalf of the bridegrooms.
The state government also gave each of the brides N20,000 and a set of furniture, with the hope that they would use the money to set up their own businesses.

Mass weddings are popular in many countries including Krarachi, Bogota and where single women and men get married ibn larvish ceremonies once or twice a year.
