Often given a 'rock star' welcome around the world Colonel Gaddafi had an eccentric and egoistic personality. He once arrived in Rome with a 300-strong retinue on three Airbuses. As ever, he brought with him a giant Bedouin tent, which was erected in a park in the centre of the city and where he was to stay and conduct business.
In 2007, he took a camel on a visit to Paris and pitched his tent in the grounds of a five-star hotel. Many will say Gaddafi was more of a mad man than a bad one. Maybe if his mental problems had been diagnosed and treated, thousands of people could still be alive.
He was all for women's rights. Gaddafi hired an all-women team because he wanted to empower them. However, he insisted that they wore high heels, jewellery, make-up and nail polish.
Here are ten strange things about Gaddafi:He was all for women's rights. Gaddafi hired an all-women team because he wanted to empower them. However, he insisted that they wore high heels, jewellery, make-up and nail polish.
ONE: He had several 22 carat gold-plated personal hand guns. The pistol that was found on him before he died appears to be a Browning Hi Power, a 9mm handgun used by military forces around the world, including, at one time, the SAS say experts. The dictator had an arsenal of other expensive customised weapons. The question is: What kind of company manufactures gold-plated hand guns?
TWO: He had a flyswatter with a gold elephant on top, kept gilded statues of himself, used a gold-plated tea trolley, and commissioned a solid gold chaise-longue in the shape of a mermaid with his daughter Aisha’s face. A large solid gold medallion was also found in one of Aisha's houses and her Olympic size swimming is now public property.

THREE: Gaddafi owned several wigs to enhance his looks. Insiders says his wigs were 100 per cent human hair, custom-made and imported from exclusive salons in Asia. At the hospital, after he died, Libyan officials ran a number of tests, including on hair samples for DNA to prove the identity of the dictator. Tests results shoed the the hair was not Mommar Gaddafi’s. The slain leader was wearing a wig!
FOUR: Gaddafi lavished money on the good things in life money could buy. He owned many playboy-style resorts with the his cronies and several complexes of opulent sea-front villas on the outskirts of Tripoli where they relaxed and had fun parties. The pools were littered with fun toys such as canoes, quad bike and jet skis.
Play time: A rebel with an AK47 sits triumphant in a canoe in one of the pools in Gaddafi's exclusive coastal resort on the outskirts of Tripoli
Expensive: The weekend party house on the outskirts of Tripoli belonging to Mutassim Gaddafi, military commander and son of Gaddafi who led government forces in a brutal campaign against rebels
Plush: Mutassim's party house has sea views, an expensive television, rugs and white furniture
Luxury: The house even has a cliff top hot tub overlooking the sea. The house is one of three properties belonging to Gaddafi in the exclusive complex
Music: Rebels play on a baby grand piano inside the weekend party house of Abdullah Senussi, Gaddafi's spy chief and brother-in-law
Drinks: Alcohol was also found in Mustassim's house - here are some of the discarded alcohol boxes and bottles
Remarkable: The home in the exclusive Regatta complex on the outskirts of Tripoli is one of three properties belonging to Gaddafi sons
Luxurious: Mutassim's dining room with black, silver and white furniture - it even has a bar at the end
Tripoli paradise: The weekend party houses of Gaddafi sons of Mutassim Gaddafi (far right), Hannibal (top of hill) and Hamed (front)
Discrete luxuries: A set of speakers which have been designed to look like rocks in Mutassim Gaddafi's party house. The sheer extravagance is a world away from the lives of ordinary Libyans
Rebels take over: A statue is felled at the opulent property on the outskirts of Tripoli
Even the silk-like tissues are labelled five star in Mutassim Gaddafi's party house
FIVE: Gaddafi loved his jets. His favourites were his fleet of Airbus 340s which were custom made and fitted for ultimate luxury. He travelled throughout the world, ruling the Libyans, entertaining, dinning and sleeping in absolute comfort.
