Why Britain is unable to curb the floods in Somerset?

ENGLAND - The rains have poured down without rebating. Somerset in south west England has gradually been submerged under widespread
floods and the whole country has looked on with nonchalance. In fact, some have watched the disaster unfold with far removed lackadaisical interest. But as a first world developed country it makes me wonder why the government has not been able to do anything.

I watched the news on Thursday night intrigued by the fact that a family with a disable child had been trapped in their home and cut off from the rest of their community for a week!

Now, if this was Ikire - a small town in Nigeria, I would understand but not our world acclaimed seaside resort. Somerset lies on the southernmost part of the southwest of England and has the best beaches in the country. During summer, it is one of the best places to be in the UK.

I carried out this quiz that I made up to help me decide what is really going on in the south of England. People who took part in the quiz choose between one and three questions. You can try it too and send in your reply in the comments section.
  1. There is not much to do in the coastal areas in the winter so it is a waste of time to fix the floods.
  2. No one of importance lives there.
  3. UK is broke and cannot afford to dredge the rivers and build flood barriers on the sea shore.
  4. The government wants the insurance companies to pay out.
  5. The government wants the local residents to abandon their homes, then move them away and build a new government owed resort.
  6. No one is interested.

ANSWER: Most people picked 3 and 4. What did you choose?
