RUSSIA -This year's Winter Olympics has taken off on Friday with much funfair and amid tremendous security. The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, also known as
the 22nd Winter Olympics, is being held in Sochi, Russia. 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines will be held throughout the Games. Russia is the largest country in the world. It takes nine hours to travel from on end of the vast country to the other. There are 198 ethnic groups and according to an official estimate for 1 January 2014, the population of Russia is 143,657,134.

The games has not been without controversy. There have been allegations of corruption leading to the games, threats by Jihadist groups, concerns for the safety and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) athletes and supporters during the Games. Russia recently banned the promotion of homosexual activities to minors.
The games officially opened at around 4.15pm London time.
