Hello...what's your name?

My name is Bunmi Adekoya.

Nigerian Schools Foundation NSF (UK).

What is it about?

It’s essentially an old Schools network.

When was it founded?

April 2012.

Who are the founders?

9 Alumni Associations.

How many members have you got?

What is your position?

Secretary.

Who are the officials?

Chair - Bimbo Babarinde, Coordinator - Wole Sanwo, Secretary -Bunmi Adekoya, Public Relation Officer-Dele Dada and Assistant Public Relation Officer - Nwene Morris.

What event are you organising and when?

We are organising our 6th Annual Sports & Family Fun Day, which will be held on Bank Holiday Sunday 27th August 2017.

When did this event start?

We held our first event on 12th August 2012, the same day as the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

Why?

Historically, NSF (UK), was spearheaded by an Old Boys Association, ICOBA Europe ((Igbobi College, Yaba).

We expended a low profile event, which had been running for many years to encompass other Alumni schools. The 2012 Olympics hysteria in London was used as the backdrop to have our own mini Olympics.

And... 
 It was meant to be a one off, as there appeared to be a need for an event such as this. It was well embraced by the community and hence subsequently we have continued to host the evenly yearly.

What's the aim?

Its primary purpose is to establish a global platform for social interaction, through sporting and educational activities between former students also known as 'Old Boys and Old Girls' of secondary schools in Nigeria.

Which schools are involved?

The core of our member schools is currently from the southwest region of Nigeria. We currently have members from four zones. We are now actively inviting and openly welcome members from all geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

Why should people come?

We had 1,300 at the event last year and we expect a lot more this year. Anecdotally, it’s been known as the largest gathering of Nigerians at any event in the UK which is not Church or music related.

What highlights should visitors expect?

FUN! FUN! FUN! Many fun-filled activities for children and adults. There will be cohesive community involvement and interaction; representatives from participating member alumni schools and associations will compete in the various sporting and family fun events. In addition, there will be various exhibitions stalls and other promotional activities. It is envisaged as always to be an all-round fun day for the entire family.

What events will happen on the day?

A few of the events to expect are: Football; Lawn tennis; Table tennis; various Athletics; Catching the train; Egg and spoon race; Tug of war, Cricket; Face painting for the children and many more.

Do visitors need to dress in a certain way?

They should dress as informally as possible as it is an interactive session, so, sportswear is ideal so that everyone can participate fully.

The event is a sports day which is mainly activities based; this will prevent serious injuries or wardrobe malfunction. 

Tell me about the most exciting part of the event…

The passion and competitive spirit of the schools displayed in order to win medals and/or trophies.

What did you enjoy the most last year?

Everything! In the past, we held the events in venues with little or no protection for our guests from the adverse weather probable in August. Our new venue, Allianz Park is weather proof, which means you and your family are all guaranteed to have fun regardless of the weather. That’s OUR PROMISE!

Any prizes? For what? Like what?

There are medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze) for winners and sponsored trophies for a few competitions e.g. the overall winning school with the most points.

Food and music?

Yes, we have live music and catering facilities on site.

Market stalls?

We have exhibition stands (a few are still available) priced at £100 for any goods and services to be promoted to the community apart from catering, which is the sole right of the venue.

Ice-cream?

Yes.

Children?

Yes, approx. 50% attendees are children.

Children's activities?

We have track events for different age groups. This year there will be professional trainers who will attend to the younger ones for Lawn tennis and Table tennis. There will also be training and mentoring on the day and time to arrange competitive matches for them.

Celebrities or famous people?

We’ve had DJ Abrantee (Capital Xtra) entertain at our event, Gillian Joseph (Sky news), Tom Ilube, named as the most powerful black person in the UK in 2016, just to mention a few.

What would like to say about the event to people who didn’t school in Nigeria?

The event is not only for those who schooled in Nigeria but to Nigerians generally. This is a ‘MUST’ attend event, a forum where you reconnect with old friends and watch Nigerian culture on the tracks.

Where is the event and time?

The Sports Day will be held at Allianz Park, Greenland Lanes, Hendon, London NW4 1RL from 12noon to 7pm.

Any tickets? Price and how to get tickets?

The entry fee is £2 at the door or you can buy your tickets through Eventbrite (plus their fees).

Tickets at the gates?
You can get tickets at the gate also at £2 each.

• As always, it was a fantastic event, bursting with high-energy, high spirits, everyone felt like a family;

• Fantastic way to bring people together. Great for networking. I love it.
