If you still thinking about what to do today to celebrate the Nigerian independence day here is a round-up of what's on in the capital this weekend:
Before we go further, let's get a clear picture of where Nigeria is coming from.
It has been 56 years since it gained independence from Britain. The history of Nigeria ias linked to the "Scramble for Africa." This was the invasion, occupation, division, colonization and annexation of African territory by European powers during the period of New Imperialism, between 1881 and 1914. British colonisers invaded the area now known as Nigeria and on 1 January 1901, Nigeria became a British protectorate, part of the British Empire. It was during the scramble for Africa, that the map of Nigeria was sketched. The British took over the territory, occupied and controlled it. The British colonisers then divided the occupied lands between the Southern Protectorate and the Northern Protectorate. The north and the south were later amalgamated by Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, the then governor of the two protectorates, in 1914. The country became independent in 1960.
This is enough reason for us to celebrate our freedom!
