Hurricane Sandy - 33 DEAD AND 16,000 FLIGHTS CANCELLED

USA - Americans living on the north east coast of America have experienced the scariest, most devastating and most terrifying storm ever seen before in that region.

The massive storm, which hurtled across more than a half-dozen states on Monday night and into Tuesday morning, has led to at least 33 deaths, 11,000 in emergency shelters and 8m residents evacuated along the East Coast. In West Virginia massive snow was dumped by hurricane Sandy.

As Sandy struck, flooding on a massive scale began right across the New York area, water from the Hudson River poured in with millions of gallons roaring into the Brooklyn Battery tunnel. Tidal waves as high as 14 feet above normal, seawater flooded many of the city's subway tunnels and the city came to a standstill.

Airports remain closed and thousands of tourists in New York for half term have no idea when they will be able to return home.

New York has now been declared a major disaster area. Governor Andrew Cuomo said, 'It was as bad as anything I have experienced in New York'. Damage is said to run into billions of dollars.

New York is still mostly under water and millions people are without power. There have also been outbreaks of fire and electrical explosions. Hundreds of homes have been damaged and millions of people have been plunged into misery and chaos.
The city's Mayor has admitted that it could take up to five days to have the city's subway system running again.

In the Caribbean, 60 people have declared dead as Hurricane Sandy hit Haiti.
